09.19.09 Avanza Top Azzuri For First Time, 3-2
The Ladies in Blue fell to Juventus Avanza for the first time ever in league or tournament play, 3-2, at Marlin Park, on a penalty kick goal in the waning minutes. Avanza outshoot the Azzuri 14-11 and scored early and late to break a 2 1/2 year winless streak against the Azzuri (0-4-3 dating back to April 2007).
Avanza came out gunning in the first half, scoring first on a great cross into the box which set up a nice finish. The Azzuri clawed back and Fahazia found the equalizer minutes later, and it looked as though the sluggish Azzuri would somehow scratch out a halftime tie, despite being outshot 8-2. But a strange goalie footfault call in the last minutes set up an Avanza free kick from the top of the box---they converted a resulting rebound that got loose in the box and took a 2-1 halftime lead.
The determined Azzuri came out battling in the second half, outshooting Avanza 9-5 and Soha found the equalizer with about 15 minutes to play. The Azzuri had a number of quality attempts in the second half and nearly took the lead after that, were it not for very solid goalie work by the Avanza keeper.
A late penalty (last 5 minutes) on the Azzuri defense, though, set up an Avanza PK, which they did not miss, and the Avanza defense held on to secure their first win over the Azzuri, 3-2.
The Azzuri fell to 1-1-1 in Fall 2009 Abronzino play.
